09:20 Panel discussion – Harnessing disruption: how can technology and innovation deliver better outcomes for consumers?
Technology has disrupted and changed the way we live our lives and interact with one another. If we are to keep pace with a rapidly changing world, both from a product and regulatory point of view, technology and innovation will undoubtedly have a role to play. At the same time the needs and expectations of tomorrow’s savers is changing, with environmental and sustainability concerns rising to the top of the agenda as well as opportunities for growth coming from new markets and maturing economies. The question to ask ourselves is how we can use the power of technology and innovation to make our industry more accessible, more open to ultimately deliver better outcomes for our savers.
- What role can technology play in driving further development of products and services?
- How can such a highly intermediated industry get closer to its customers’ needs?
- How far and how fast can we move towards mainstreaming ESG and SRI in response to changing social attitudes?
- Do we have the right product set for the new world of individual retirement decisions?
- Will the rise of the global middle class change the way that asset managers serve investor needs in the UK and around the world?
- How can regulation of the asset management industry keep pace with a rapidly changing and globalised society?

11:00 Panel discussion – Unlocking potential: talent and behaviours in a global technological age
The world of work is changing. Significant developments in technology, a greater emphasis on agility and international mobility and changes in social attitudes are creating opportunities for us to enhance our position on the global stage. Yet, financial services have also come under intense fire for their lack of diversity and created a perception that we don’t look like the clients and customers we serve, at a time when the evidence for performance of more diverse firms is irrefutable.
- What will the workplace of the future look like or will working as we know it be mostly virtual?
- What new styles of leadership and thinking will be required in this new environment with a heightened sensitivity to nonfinancial misconduct and #MeToo?
- How can greater agility be achieved in a traditionally conservative setting?
- How do we retain our attractiveness to a global workforce?
- How do we move the concept of diversity on from a series of initiatives to becoming the heart of our strategic business planning?
- How do we create meaningful KPIs on diversity that demonstrate we are moving the dial?

12:30 Panel discussion – New frontiers: safeguarding global competitiveness in a post-Brexit landscape
The world has not stopped as the UK and the EU have been negotiating the UK’s exit. New markets are coming into sight as more people than ever have the means to save and invest, with the UK’s reputation as a trusted and well regulated market acting as a magnet. EU savers and investors should still all be able to benefit from the expertise which exists in their close neighbour. But what should our industry and policy makers focus on to sharpen the UK’s competitive edge, cementing its place as the nature place to manage the world’s savings?
- How has the UK’s role in the world changed post-Brexit and how should we be positioning the UK to succeed in the decades ahead?
- What do we need to ensure that the UK is an attractive global location for those looking to invest their pensions and savings, whether from elsewhere in Europe or from emerging markets with a growing middle class?
- How do we influence and preserve the global regulatory infrastructure to ensure that the UK asset management industry continues to flourish?
- The UK is seen as having a well-regulated and trusted financial services sector. In an increasingly protectionist environment, how should we position the UK market’s brand and values?
