The Investment Association is pleased to invite you to the Culture in Investment Management Forum on 22 September, this year in a virtual format.
Description
Investment management firms realise that culture has a real impact on a company’s long-term reputation and sustainability. It is the underlying culture that influences the way people think, act and make decisions. Senior leaders may be confident that their firm already has a healthy culture that supports its strategy however it is important to monitor your culture, making changes were appropriate.
Attending this event will provide you with:

Chris Cummings, Chief Executive, The Investment Association
Chris Cummings is the Chief Executive of The Investment Association, a post he has held since September 2016. The Investment Association is the trade body that represents UK-based investment managers.
He is a member of HM Treasury’s Asset Management Taskforce, and was a founding member of its Financial Services Trade & Investment Board. He serves as a Board member on EFAMA, the European trade association for investment management and of IIFA the international association for investment management.
He was previously a member of the Financial Conduct Authority’s Regulatory Decisions Committee, a Settlement Decision Maker for the Payment Services Regulator. He served on the Foreign & Commonwealth’s Diplomatic Excellence Panel.
Before joining The Investment Association he was the founding CEO of TheCityUK, held senior posts in banking, insurance and consulting with major global firms. He is a regular columnist, commentator and speaker on issues of international competitiveness and regulation in financial services.
Pauline Hawkes-Bunyan, Director, Business: Risk, Culture & Resilience, The Investment Association
Pauline is the Executive Director responsible for the Business: Risk, Culture & Resilience Team at The Investment Association (IA). She supports IA member firms to shape and respond to policy issues that impact on people and their firms.

Pauline is the overall ExCo lead on the IA’s work to support its members during COVID-19, this work now includes looking beyond the pandemic to the Future World of Work.
Pauline has spent more than 20 years in the investment management industry seeing industry opportunities and challenges from adviser, in-house and trade body perspectives. Prior to joining the IA, Pauline was a Director at Aviva and Financial Services Partner at Deloitte.
Keynote
Sheldon Mills, Executive Director, Consumers, and Competition, FCA
Sheldon was appointed Executive Director, Consumers and Competition in December 2020. He was previously the Interim Executive Director of Strategy and Competition at the FCA. Sheldon joined the FCA in November 2018.
Previously, as Senior Director at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Sheldon had overall leadership responsibility for the delivery of UK merger control across the entire economy and for the strategic design and implementation of the new UK State Aid regime. He is a qualified solicitor and prior to joining the CMA he practised law at King & Wood Mallesons and Jones Day, counselling a range of UK and international clients in antitrust and competition law.
Sheldon Mills holds undergraduate and postgraduate law degrees from King’s College, London and was born and raised in Cardiff, Wales.

Hanneke Smits, Chief Executive Officer, BNY Mellon Investment Management
Hanneke Smits is CEO of BNY Mellon Investment Management and a member of BNY Mellon’s Executive Committee.
With nearly 30 years of investment experience, Hanneke was previously CEO of Newton Investment Management, a BNY Mellon Investment Management firm, from 2016 to 2020. Prior to Newton, she served on the Executive Committee at private equity firm Adams Street Partners from 2001 to 2014, having been Chief Investment Officer from 2008 to 2014. She joined Adams Street in 1997 to build out its global investment capabilities, and successfully launched its presence in Europe and Asia. Before joining Adams Street, she was an investment manager at Pantheon Ventures, and worked for Philips China Hong Kong Group.
Hanneke is a member of The Investment Association’s board, the trade body that represents UK investment managers, and serves as Chair of Impetus, a venture philanthropy organization which backs charities to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people. As part of her role with Impetus, she is Trustee of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), founded in 2011 by The Sutton Trust in partnership with Impetus. Hanneke was also a Non-Executive Director to the Court of the Bank of England, and a co-founder and first Chair of Level 20, a not-for-profit organization set up in 2015 to inspire women to join and succeed in the private equity industry.
Charlotte Carter, Culture, Engagement and Wellbeing Lead, KPMG UK
Charlotte has been with KPMG for over 20 years, working in both client-facing and internal roles and is currently leading on culture, engagement and wellbeing for the UK firm of over 16,000 employees.
With purpose and culture critical to underpinning successful delivery of strategy, this is a great opportunity to discuss a topic that has increasing importance and priority at Board level.
Jennifer Sundberg, Co-CEO, Board intelligence

David Berman advises a range of financial institutions on key regulatory/compliance matters and investigations, and frequently counsels boards and senior management teams on significant regulatory issues. Mr. Berman specialises in tactical / strategic issue prevention, containment and resolution – and has an outstanding track-record of achieving optimal outcomes for clients. Mr. Berman advises extensively on a wide spectrum of issues, including market conduct, culture and conduct, internal investigations, individual accountability, governance, conflicts of interest, inducements, regulatory aspects of transactions, remediation and redress exercises, and conduct of business regulation generally. Mr. Berman has significant experience of acting as a “skilled person” under Section 166 FSMA 2000.

Marie is the CEO of Northern Trust Global Investment, LTD (UK) and sits on the boards of Northern Trust Global Funds, PLC; Northern Trust Fund Managers (Ireland) Limited, Northern Trust Investment Funds and FlexShares ETF ICAV Funds. Marie serves on several Executive, business and risk committees globally for Northern Trust Asset Management including the Northern Trust Asset Management Executive Committee and EMEA cross-business.
Joining Northern Trust in 2011, Marie held executive positions at iShares/Blackrock, JPMorgan Asset Management and Smith Barney. Marie’s comprehensive business acumen highlights driving diverse and profitable growth in businesses. Her multifaceted career began as a financial advisor and subsequently includes experience in securities lending, trading, product development, sales management and P&L management.

Alexandra Altinger has 28 years’ experience in the wealth and asset management industry across Europe, Asia and the US. She previously spent four years as CEO of Sandaire Investment Office, a UK multi-family office, where she led the business integration process after Sandaire acquired Lord North Street Private Office. Prior to Sandaire, Alexandra worked within the executive team of Lansdowne Partners International, helping to lead the firm’s repositioning efforts for its long-only products in global institutional markets. Previously she was at Wellington Management International where she held a number of senior roles including leading Wellington’s mutual fund in Europe. Alexandra has also served as an Equity Research Analyst at John Hancock in Boston and has worked in Japanese equities research sales for Goldman Sachs in Tokyo and London. She started her financial career as a Proprietary Trader with Banque Nationale de Paris (Securities) in Tokyo. Alexandra has a Bachelor of Sciences and a Master of Sciences in International Economics from Université de Paris-Dauphine, Paris and is a CFA Charterholder and member of the CFA UK Advisory Council. She is a founding member of the Advisory Committee of The Diversity Project, an ambitious initiative to promote diversity in all its forms across the UK asset management sector. Most recently she set up Pendal Group’s Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee of which she is currently Co-Chair. Alexandra is the current Chair of the Investment Association’s Business Forum.
