European elections: The political landscape, the electoral process, and implications for financial services
Description
.
WHY ATTEND
This webinar will provide an overview of the main political parties and groups, and their platforms in the upcoming European elections. It will also explore likely policy priorities of the Commission, Parliament, and Council and how the European elections and inter-institutional negotiations will shape these. In particular, it will analyse the potential scenarios, the balance of power in the European Parliament and Council and key moments in the transition to a new policy agenda.
Key questions for discussion:
- What are the roles of the main actors, including the Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) Committee, and how might their influence evolve ahead of and after the appointment of a new Commission?
- What are the likely coalitions and alliances that could emerge, and how would they influence the EU's decision-making process? Will centrist coalitions continue to hold, or will a tilt towards the right force a rethink in how the Parliament, Commission and Council will function in the next term?
- What are the main issues facing the European Union and its Member States over the next five years? How will macro issues like economic uncertainty and an ongoing war in Ukraine influence the election? What inference can be drawn from recent national elections, and how do the different political parties propose to address these issues?
- How will the UK/EU relationship evolve following a tumultuous few years, and how will elections in both the UK and the EU during 2024 affect the growing momentum in favour of cooperation on financial services?
